The Xtreme Outlaw 250 on June 17-21, 2010 was one of those races that really go down in the memory banks, namely as one you do not want to have a repeat of. VORRA did an incredible job of organization and setting the track up, especially considering the odds against them and that they were still constructing and marking the track at the time of the driver’s meeting on Friday evening. Saturday’s race presented a very hard virgin track with an insurmountable hill climb that found, at one point, nearly twenty racing cars and trucks piled together. The new VORRA tracking devices within each car that displayed location on the web was an appreciated addition for all racers and pit crews alike. For the Two Larrys Team, #1112 came back with a vengence after the Yerington meltdown(s) and performed flawlessly. Until the beam broke and the shock was flailing around and creating its own bullet holes inside the wall and the fender. Despite this, we managed to turn in on our first lap a little over thirty-six minutes before the next Class 11 car, #1107. At this point, the decision was made to save the car with its current minimal damage, as another turn around the track was sure to tear #1112 apart. We already knew that the Desert Dawg’s petfinder.com car #1106 made a slight track detour down a gulley and would remain there until the next day when it would require two tow trucks to bring the car back.
Upon the Desert Dingo’s return, we saw that they too sustained damaged but their team decision was to make it to one more check point for the Class 11 win. Imagine our surprise when it was our names called for the first place trophy on stage at the awards ceremony! Always gracious and sportsmanly, the Dingos congratulated us on our win on the Class 11 coalition forum, with which we replied,
“It was quite the shock to be handed the first place trophy on stage, as we believed the Desert Dingos had earned first place for going a check point farther than us. While the glory is great, it is only short lived for Two Larrys because the Dingos earned their first fair and square and we do not want to keep a placing we did not earn. We will concede placing and trophy to the Dingos. Congratulations to you guys for first place in a incredibly difficult race, and we will hand over the trophy in Fallon in July to its rightful owner as soon as we scrape enough together to get it back from the pawnshop. :)”
After looking into it, VORRA realized their mistake of looking at lap times alone and forgetting the Dingo’s additional checkpoint and made sincere apologies. We look forward to racing with everyone again in Fallon, NV in the middle of July!
