Smith Flat VW Show, Boys and Girls Club Fundraiser

May 4, 2014 saw TLR at the Smith Flat VW Hangout in Hangtown [Placerville], CA. The show was sponsored by Lance of TNT Powdercoating, Drew of German Auto Werks, and Tim of Sierra Landscape Material. The proceeds from the car show and raffle were to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of El Dorado County. A special thank you to Ray for organizing the show and making everything possible. The show attracted VW enthusiasts from all over Northern California, even notable business owners such as Tom Brown of ParaVi Vinyards (formerly Primus Winery, and if you have a chance check out his AMAZING show room [and bathrooms = WOW!!] and delicious high-quality wine) in Camino, CA and Charles Knight at Ruffhaus Hot Dog Co. in El Dorado Hills, CA. You might remember Charles from our March 1, 2014 posting of the Ruffhaus VW cruise.

For TLR, this show started much farther back, like over four years ago farther back. But I digress…the final details were finished up this week, first with the orange 1957 oval window ragtop with a 1914cc turbo engine Bug owned by Brad Martin. TLR put the final programming on the ignition system and this beautiful car headed to its first photo shoot, complete with a gorgeous model. Then Saturday was devoted (literally the whole day) entirely to putting the final touches on the impressive turbo 2165cc 1964 car Sleepy, owned by Frank Kopita. This car has been a LONG time in the making, but what an amazing car this has turned out to be. If you want an adrenaline rush, you don’t even have to be behind the wheel of this car – it will vibrate your ear drums even from a distance and bring chills to your soul. We are so pleased to finally see this beast owning the roads. When we have more substantial video and photos, Sleepy will also have its own page up there in our menu. Unfortunately we missed Frank by ten minutes at the show, but we will have other coverage later of Sleepy64.

In all, there was a great turnout for this show, which was the first of what will be many years to come. Over eighty cars turned up throughout the day. How could you pass it up, with bottom-less Mimosa’s, excellent local-draft IPA beer, awesome food, great live entertainment, and a raffle with plenty of generous prizes from local businesses? The overall result is spectacular – a benefit car show for kids with great VW people and an awesome turn-out. TLR is proud to do what we do, and support the causes we support.

This was an amazing surprise for us - she painted the Green Booger! Joyce Martin creates beautiful art of VW's and many subjects. Please contact her if interested in having her capture the essence of your VW.
We would like to specially congratulate Brad Martin on his People’s Choice Award (the only award given) with his 1957 Turbo Bug – this was the car’s first show. We are very proud to be involved with this car from the beginning, and aiding in Brad’s dream becoming a reality. You can view some of the build photos by clicking in the menu above. Additionally, his very talented wife Joyce Martin painted some very popular VW art, some of which sold very quickly. If you are interested in purchasing one of her works or commissioning her for a custom painting, please contact:

We were so awed, impressed, and grateful to be bestowed with her gift of a painting of the Green Booger, which is modeled from the 2012 VORRA Halloween BBQ races at Prairie City. Thank you so much Joyce, for your thoughtful gift!

Please click on each photo if you would like to see an enlarged version with more of the photo in it. We didn’t bring our 1964 Notchback this time – we simply didn’t have the time to prep that in addition to the other two excellent TLR representatives. I think they will certainly suffice. 😉
