Mid-race update for the VORRA USA 500. 1112 with Larry G and Larry M made it around the first lap. We initially had the lead by ten minutes by pit 2, but with a miscommunication between fuel provider we ended up waiting ten minutes until David Meek Jr. 1142 with Bob Messer helping generously gave us some of their fuel. We eventually caught back up with him and the Desert Dingo 1107 car, and made great time until mile 137 a big hill climb. Try as she might, the Booger just couldn’t crest it. A call to Weatherman sent a tow vehicle out to us, and at forty minutes David Meek caught up to 1112 and attempted the hill climb. No luck. I think the elevens will need assistance all day there. After a forty-five minute wait, “Shortbus” crested the hill and pulled us up and over with his jeep. Our prior gas issues haunted us, we spent many of the downhills after that with the car turned off to save gas. We did make it back to pit 1 barely, which is a 155 mile loop (not including the near-forty miles between start and pit 1), refueled, and sent Larry G and Larry C on their way, this time with Larry C at the wheel. Our pit time did hold us back, and many thanks to Jim Graham of the Desert Dingos for his assistance.
Sadly, the Desert Dingo car 1107 has gone on its side twice, Emme Hall at the wheel. They are a little shook up, but they have continued and we expect them into pit 1 shortly. David Meek Jr. seems to be running strong, with minor overheating issues in the first lap of the race. I didn’t catch the number, but a Class 1 was just brought to pit 1 on a flatbed tow truck. The course has silt, hill climbs, technical areas, and straight-aways. Drifting for about four miles from right-left-right-left was exciting, though it does glaze the front brakes. Our new ebrake came in very handy on the hill climb.
It’s great to see VORRA and the volunteers again, they are so helpful and just want the best for everyone (which means fun, too!). It’s great to see familiar faces and meet new ones. We expect 1112 back to pit 1 about 7:30 or 8pm, where Larry G will again take the wheel with Larry M co-driving for the finish.
