Updates…and PARTS! It’s like Christmas came early.

I haven’t done an update in a couple of weeks, so I will go backwards. Starting with this weekend!

Headway is being made on CBCFS Racing Paul Nauleau’s VW Bug rally car. You may remember them from being the first Class 11 finisher at the 2015 SCORE Baja 1000. We are excited to be a part of his next adventure, a rally car that retains the Class 11 look. More on that as the build progresses! But for now, things have to get worse before they are better, so it’s just a mess of parts and pieces.

Paul and crew prepped the pan for welding when they were here in October, so that is what we have been working on.

Larry G in his welding glory.

And with all race cars, you need lots of new parts! The parts have starting arriving. Here is the first drool-worthy photo of them.

Parts, parts, and more parts to come!

Some close-ups:

Beam prepped, it has to start somewhere.

For more randomness, here is a ’98 VR6 Jetta that really needed a cleaning. And I mean REALLY, inside and out, as the inside smelled like a moldy foot. It took three days, with the steamer, carpet cleaner, shop vac, various cleaners and conditioners, and tons of elbow grease. But wouldn’t you say she cleaned up pretty? It smells much, much better now as well. But other than cosmetic, this beauty also needed a heater core, thermostat, and ignition switch.

It looks WAY better. Trust me.

It looks WAY better. Trust me.

Then there’s this fun toy. We built an engine stand out of leftover cage tubing and some other parts we had lying around. This is especially awesome because we can start and tune engines on it too.

Reaching back into October, we had a visit from Paul, Dave, and Hunter to work on the rally car! What was originally going to be Frankenshine #1121 (and here) in 2011 for TLR will now be the rally car for CBCFS.

Here are some photos from that weekend as the prep commenced. Remember, sometimes you need to take a break and ride a bike.

And for your viewing pleasure, here is some racing stuff in the spirit up the upcoming Baja 1000! My internet is bunk tonight so I cannot load it to embed it here, you’ll have to visit it directly:

CBCFS Racing #1116 takes the 2015 SCORE Baja 1000!

And I should have made that title in all-caps, because I cannot convey how EXCITED we are for them! Unfortunately they did not make it to the finish within the allotted 33 hours, they made it in roughly 38 hours. THREE Class 11’s finished this year out of seven, in what proved to actually be a difficult course.

Paul Nauleau, head of CBCFS Racing, contacted us again in early 2015 about his plans for making November’s 2015 BugLight SCORE Baja 1000. Well, of course we would love to help him race it again! As a refresher, you can read about their previous experiences prepping for the 2013 Tecate Baja 1000 with us at Two Larrys Racing headquarters HERE.

I must say, it has been an honor and privilege to work with CBCFS Racing. Their team is organized, determined, learn quickly, and overall generally just NICE people. A more worthy team of the Baja title is hard to imagine. I will post here later when team experience stories have been shared, and let them tell you in their own words. We followed the race online and via cell phone communication from start to end, and what an anxiety-ridden, close race with some well-matched competition it was. Leads and placements were swapped more times than I can count.

#1116 CBCFS Racing/Paul Nauleau for the first place finisher in the Baja 1000! It unfortunately does not count as a win, as they did not make it to the finish within the 33 hour mark. But a finish in the Baja is bragging rights within itself, so regardless of trophy or no, this is a win on our book! Congratulations!

For second Class 11 finisher, #1121 Team H12:One Racing, Dennis Hollenbeck proved a worthy competitor and defender of his 2014 SCORE Baja 1000 championship! This team races for a fantastic cause as well, and supports their local women/children’s shelter and needy folk.

Third place finisher was #1113 Wallentine Motorsports, Brian Wallentine. You probably won’t recognize this car the way it is now, but this used to be #1106 PetFinder (the red car) owned by Jeff Lee. How awesome it’s gone on to participate on the Baja 1000!

Fourth in line was multi-Baja 1000 champion Eric Solorzano with #1111, racing with Robert Johnson who said the track was one of the roughest he’s experienced. Unfortunately he did not finish, but he gave CBCFS Racing quite an exciting lead swap several times! We are still unclear as to what happened to take them out around the 350 mile mark, though it was reported the race was really hard on their front suspension and they were tightening ball joints, etc..

Fifth was #1101, the Cops Racing Class 11 with Rene Rodriguez. We are still unclear what took them out of the race, but they provided some exciting placement swapping as well!

Sixth were #1129 3 Amigos Racing with Dave Bolles. They were taken out at 67 miles with a rock that slammed into their head and removed the valve cover and dumped the oil. Engine failure occurred, resulting in their return to Ensenada.

Seventh were #1107 the Desert Dingoes and Jim Graham. They experienced issues from almost the beginning of the race (prior actually) and had the wrong mixture of fuel. They added a fuel additive that was supposed to bump the octane, but it had an adverse affect on their fuel sponges and turned them essentially to mush. The mush made its way through the system, and they were unable to flush it fully. They were stopped around race mile 31, but made their way to around rm 50 before being towed back.

Congratulations to everyone! Just being there is an accomplishment in itself.

Changes to SCORE Class 11 Rules

Well, it has been quite some time since there has been a post here! Apologies for that. I do owe you guys photos and fun from several different builds we have been working on. I will get to posting those…eventually. 😉

Rules changes have recently been a hot topic among the 11 guys, and if you would like to see how hot it has become you can visit these two threads on the Class 11 Coalition: Aftermarket Shifters (discussion started here), continued here SCORE Rulebook Updates Happening.

SCORE recently made post regarding the changes for Class 11, Class 5/1600, and Class 1/2 1600 (as seen here: http://score-international.com/11-5-1600-12-1600/)

Statement from SCORE Tech director, Art Savedra,

After almost two years of watching this 8-to-1 low compression engine combination compete against the High compression engines I have seen a very competitive new introduction and a need for a change in the 1600cc Class rule. I am talking about 1/2-1600, 5-1600 and Class 11 here at SCORE International Off-Road Racing. I now see the need to add a different way to race in this class and still be competitive, this is not a change in the rules, but a different way to build your engine and still be able to race.

As of the SCORE Baja Sur 500, these changes will be in effect.

Good luck, Have fun, and Be careful!!!

Art Savedra

1/2-1600, 5/1600 and Class 9 and 11 are effected by the wording OR NOT WORDING that is in the 2011 – 2015 SCORE rule book. The wording should read as;

1) NOT ALLOWED – TITANIUM VALVES IN 1600cc ENGINES

2) ANY SINGLE VALVE SPRING ALLOWED…..”CONICOL or BEE HIVE” SPRING ARE ALLOWED.

3) STAINLESS STEEL VALVES ALLOWED

4) MOFOCO HEADS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED AS STOCK REPLACEMENT HEADS

CLASS 11 with the introduction of the “8.0 to 1 Low compression engine” in to this class as an option. There will be a temporary rule modification until SCORE Tech director can find an air box that will work under the stock rear deck lid rules along the Class 11 shifter and bumper rule they will read as;

1) HOOD EXTENSIONS ARE ALLOWED ONLY TO THE “LOW COMPRESSION” ENGINES VEHICLES UNTIL SCORE TECH DIRECTOR FINDS A WORKING AIR BOX.
CUTTING OR TRIMMING OF LOUVERS OR AIR VENTS UNDER REAR WINDOW IS NOT ALLOWED. THIS RULE APPLIES TO 5/1600 ALSO.

2) ANY SHIFTER MAYBE USED. THE SHIFTER MUST USE THE SHOCK SHIFTER BOLT HOLES WITHOUT ANY MODIFICATIONS TO THE SHOCK VW BELLY PAN.

3) THE USE OF AFTER MARKET BUMPERS “BRUSH GUARDS” OUTSIDE THE SHOCK BUMPER IS NOT ALLOWED. A SCORE CLASS 11 MUST RETAIN THE SHOCK PROFILE “SILHOUETTE” OF A STOCK VW SEDAN.

1600cc engine classes. Class 1-2 1600, 5-1600, and 11 will be allowed to use optional engine formula with 1600cc maximum displacement and an 8 to 1 (8.0 to 1) compression ratio maximum, stock replacement heads with no porting may be used following the same valve and spark plug dimensions as the current SCORE rule. Stock intake end castings must be completely stock with no polishing allowed, an Empi or Webber 40 or 44 carburetor may be used and tube style intake manifold only.
Class 5-1600 and 11 must use a 26mm PUM venturi maximum,
Class 1-2-1600 must use a 25mm PUM venture maximum for two seat and 24mm PUM venturi for single seat. Pump gas only, 91 Octane maximum.

2015 Racing Association Schedules

Here is a list of some of the association’s schedules for 2015. Feel free to contact us if you would like your schedule included here – we would love to.

PLEASE NOTE – if you are thinking of racing multiple associations in the year, please be sure to look over EACH association’s rules and fees. They DO vary and the rulebook and class build specifications aren’t necessarily the same. The standard rulebook emulated by most is the SCORE rulebook, but you must purchase that at the SCORE website (or find a friend who has one). Most other associations offer their rulebook for free online, usually in PDF format.

“COORP would like to thank all of our racers and spectators for your support over the last three years. This has been a lot of fun to watch this evolve in Central Oregon and we believe that this can continue to grow. At this time COORP is looking for help to keep this going. We need financial help and dedicated people that want to see this sport grow. If we don’t get some help, we’ll be forced to close down and not open for the 2015 season.
If you are interested and believe that you can be the help that we at COORP need, then send a PM or call one of us (phone numbers on the website, www.centraloregonracepark.com) and we’ll discuss the possibilities.
This has been an amazing experience for all of us and we honestly hope to continue and keep this event in Central Oregon. Thank you!”

BOR – Bonneville Offroad Racing

Has not updated website to reflect 2015 schedule. However, this was posted on their Facebook page:

“Kyle MacArthur
January 15, 2015 at 6:22pm

My good off-road racing friends,

First off, thank you to all the racers, organizers, sponsors, and the BLM staff that has and continues to work with us. We’ve been quiet for a month or more, and I hope to use this opportunity to explain why and to communicate our plan moving forward.

THE PAST AND PRESENT SITUATION:
It is with great disappointment and much anguish that I announce that Bonneville Off-Road Racing (BOR) as an organization will not be sanctioning races on land administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) through the year 2015. Before I get into the details of how this has come to pass, please realize that BOR is not by any means dead, and will continue to thrive through 2015 and beyond.

I think it is important to start with a recent history of BOR, especially the events and circumstances leading up to and including to the Wendover 2014 Rewound Race, and what transpired following the race.
Throughout the years, BOR has established a philosophy to become a racing organization that preserves and protects the rights to hold sanctioned, small, low impact, everyman races on BLM land in Nevada, Utah and elsewhere, while doing restoration work on public roads in order to preserve those routes used by environmental researchers and activists, hunters, ranchers, and motorized and non-motorized recreators alike. Two major points of our overall philosophy have been to:

• Mark race course as little as possible in order to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment (“Pack It In, Pack It Out”) and workload on the organizers and volunteers, while at the same time challenging the racers to read the course.
• Restore recently unused roads so that future generations may continue to use them in ways that benefit the general public.

To be short, this philosophy backfired at the Wendover 2014 Rewound Race, as the major issue brought to BOR’s attention was the off-course racing, something that BLM communicated to BOR post-race, and something BOR was unprepared for due to expectations established through many years of a harmonious and mutually beneficial relationship. Many spots were run wide, and a more than a few corners were cut short. Once BOR inspected the course post-race, we understood the position of BLM and their threat of a potential one year suspension from racing on BLM land.

We soon realized that the goals of BOR, the racers, and the BLM were all slightly out of alignment. It’s not that we were of opposing views, but that those views and expectations were not clearly communicated. It seemed that the three major factors that led to an impending suspension from BLM were:
• Course not marked well enough by the organizers, especially along the long stretches of roads we were trying to restore to usable condition.
• Racers, using commonly accepted desert racing techniques to either stay out of another’s dust, pass another vehicle, or look for a better line through silt, ran the course wide, in some spots as much as 50 yards.
• Unclear communication of expectations between BLM, BOR, and the racers as to what were acceptable racing and restoration practices.

Given the threat of suspension, BOR spent two full weekends in the desert south of Wendover doing road restoration and revegetation work far beyond any we had ever needed to do in the past. Long story short, BLM was happy with the work that was done, but it became clear through unofficial channels that any permit we applied for, in any BLM district in the year 2015, would be denied. A permit denial would leave an official black mark on any future permits we would apply for and would not be good for the desert racing community in general.
It was felt by BOR that since a most certain permit denial would be damaging to our reputation and organization, we decided that a self-imposed one year suspension from racing on BLM land was the best and most sensible solution to keep public land racing in the United States alive, not only for BOR, but for others such as SCORE, SNORE, BITD, VORRA, USRA, and the many others who share our goals. It was not an easy conclusion to come to.
Having said all of that…2014 was our most successful in a long time, and BOR is still very much alive and well. The volunteers, racers, and organizers are still eager to make this organization thrive, so let me get into our plans for 2015 and beyond.

THE FUTURE:
BOR will not be organizing any races on BLM land this year, end of discussion. However, that does not leave us without options for maintaining ourselves as a group of off-road racing enthusiasts, holding get-togethers and meetings, or especially holding races on other lands. We came up with a short list of options. Without getting into specifics, I’d like to list them here:
• Weekend long “Meetings in the Desert” instead of our regular Tuesday nights at Nate’s shop
• Races on individually held private land
• Races on corporately held private land
• Races on public land (city/county/Native American owned)
We have several leads that we are actively pursuing for each of the non-BLM potential racing opportunities and are welcome to ideas. We are definitely holding three Meetings in the Desert on these dates, details to be forthcoming, but they will likely either be held on 93A south of Wendover or at Five Mile. These are close to our originally planned race dates to reduce conflicts with racing events and holidays:

• Weekend of May 2nd – Five Mile Poker Run
• Weekend of June 27th – Wendover Main Pit Desert Cleanup, BLM approved
• Weekend of September 12th – ???

Rest assured that we will be applying for three permitted races outside of Wendover in 2016 and have every reason to believe they will be approved.
As always, BOR thrives on the input, help, and participation of its racers and volunteers. Thank you so much for your patience and support. Just remember, this isn’t the first time we’ve encountered hard times, and we came back from that with a vengeance. We strive to do the same once again.
Please PM me for contact info if you’d like to talk in private.

Sincerely,
Kyle MacArthur – Technical Director
Nate Srok – President and Race Director
Allen Gerber – Owner”

Who wants a classic supercar?

We do too. Even in this condition!

We recently read an article about Michael Fröhlich, a classic car dealer and restorer who has created a classic car museum. That doesn’t sound so unique – except he has his museum in the middle of the forest, and the theme is nature is stronger than technology – nature takes it back. And that’s exactly what is happening to the many classic cars and car memorabilia.

So fair warning – this article posted on messynessychic.com/ might be a bit painful to read if you are a classic car enthusiast. I know with each picture I had to say, “Nooooo!!!”

After that blasphemy, here is a meme to make you laugh.

Here is the SCORE Imperial Valley 250 race highlights video by Race-Dezert.com, if you were in the mood for a video. As stated by Race-Dezert on the article’s page,:

“The first inaugural SCORE Imperial Valley 250 is in the books.

On race day strong winds added another layer of challenges to those that raced in the Plaster City area just east of San Diego, CA. The event was broken down into two races. Bikes and Quads started in the morning while all Car and Truck classes left the starting line at 13:00 local time.

Official results are pending SCORE’s review process. Due to the layout of the course many Virtual Checkpoints where in use and the word in our forum as of right now is that many vehicles missed these VCP’s. SCORE is reviewing the driven tracks of all competitors to determine penalties that may have to get added to some competitors. Andy McMillin may have overall won the race but not in his own truck nor the #6 Sourapas truck he drives a lot but instead in the #11 Rock Star energy truck of Rob McCachren who was racing the Lucas Shortcourse truck instead.”

RIP Jeff Johnson, Race Reviews, VORRA News, Videos, and more

Today we would like to point you to other team’s race reviews from recent races run. Hmm, that was quite the alliteration. This should keep you busy for at least a little while. 😀 We haven’t had a really big update post recently, so this hopefully makes up for it.

———————-

First, we would like to offer our condolences to those involved in the Battle at Primm accident. Passenger Jeff Johnson succumbed to his injuries and has tragically passed away. The driver of the Bajalite was cut badly but released from the hospital. We are very sorry to hear of his passing, and wish him Godspeed over a perfect course.
You may read about it at Race-Dezert here. Also, if you would like to donate to his family to help cover his medical bills, etc. please visit the donation fundraiser page. The racing community outpouring has really been staggering – racers have big hearts.

1121 Team H12:One Racing. DNF fourth place standing due to mileage completed.

1121 Team H12:One Racing

You may recognize these guys from our coverage of the 2013 SCORE Baja 1000. Team H12:One Racing are back in the news, and just completed the 2014 SCORE San Felipe 250! If you have a chance, take a look at what their team supports too – they have a great big heart and race in the name of a very incredible cause. #1121 has been adopted as the mascot for the children at the La Casa de Esperanza, a refuge home for mothers and children in Mexico. Congratulations on your first finish AND second place, guys!
Read their race review at their website’s blog here.

Another fun review is from Emme Hall’s experience at the 2014 SNORE Battle at Primm. You may recognize Emme from the calendar fundraisers for their rally in Morocco, the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles. She also raced for a time with #1107 the Desert Dingos, or as an internet radio host, and car reviewer for the the YouTube show Roadfly TV and many more. Congratulations on completing Battle at Primm, Emme and Mega Monkey Motorosports!
Read Emme’s race review on her website blog here.

Also from Battle At Primm is Ed Mahoney’s in-car #1189 footage. Congratulations on your first place out of seven Class 11 cars, Ed!

Here is the official results from SNORE. Apparently someone stole the timer from the finish line (!?!) so they apologized for the delay. #1134 finished first both days and #1189 second both days.

If that’s not enough for you, here is a video of Sunday’s landrush start by Other Level Racing. You can view more of their videos from BAP at their YouTube Channel.

If you’re in the mood to troll photos on a website, here is a link to Jenn Hellstrom’s race recap on Race-Dezert, complete with a photo gallery.

Here is MORE video! Fair warning, this one is longer, about fifteen minutes. It shows class 11 action from 11BrosMotorsport’s Class 5/1600’s in-car cam.

Last in the news front, but certainly not least, there have been some developments on the VORRA front. You may have already read our previous post With a heavy heart we announce VORRA is no longer…. Jim Carius (remember him from VORRA’s Nine Town? I just had a laugh when I realized Larry G is on the preview picture for that video, too) and Sam Cothrun of Samco Fab have stepped forward and are trying to bring together investors and event organizers. You can read the thread here at Race-Dezert, with organizational info starting on page four.

Please note that the originally scheduled March 22-23 meet is STILL HAPPENING. However, this is NOT a VORRA event therefore I implore you to recognize this is a race-prep TEST RUN against other like-cars and BBQ MEET among friends with race cars at Prairie City. 😉 NOT a race event. Additionally, we received word that the originally VORRA scheduled April Prairie City races may actually be happening, so keep prepping your car as we VORRA-ites MAY race after all. I also suggest keeping an eye on that thread as nothing is set in stone yet in regards to bringing VORRA back.

I will post the gist of what is being discussed, but to stay updated daily you’ll need to visit the forum. Also, if you are an interested investor, someone who knows they will be available to race, etc. PLEASE contact Jim and Sam. They are working REALLY hard to get VORRA going again and are already working on the 2015 permits but they need racers and volunteers to commit now to make this happen.

First post from Sam:
“I have a few ideas that I am working on to get it purchased and get it back running, but it will take a group effort, we could even call it Group V…..

I spoke with the unofficial VORRA lawyer Mike Lehner about how to keep a group of Vorra stockholders safe from litigation, and the other group of people that run it safe as well. He is on board with helping. I can help too, but not run it.

If anybody is interested in talking more about it, e mail me with contact info and we can directly discuss ideas on how we can get this together and how to share the workload. We all want to see it come back at at least some level.

samcofabrication@sbcglobal.net”

Follow-up post from Jim on February 28th:
“There are some of us working behind the scenes to try and make something happen here. Basically, it take 4 things:

– Organizers time and commitment
– Money
– Volunteers time
– Racer’s commitment

If you or someone you know can help fund VORRA through this crisis through sponsorship arrangements, short term loans, donations, or some other means, we need to hear from you.

If you are not currently a ‘VORRAteer’ and have time and energy to devote to off road racing in Northern Nevada/Northern CA, we need to hear from you.

If you are a racer who is willing to commit (which means writing a check for entry fees right now) to the short course races or the desert races that still have permits standing, we need to hear from you.

Prairie City round one is scheduled for 3 weeks away. My personal opinion is we cannot meet that deadline. PC 2 however is definitely in reach, there are some ways that Yerington might be salvaged, and if we keep on racing we can start working right now on the 2015 permits and issues.

Give me a call at 530-913-9172 or shoot an email to ncspeed@gmail.com – or contact Samco Fab above.

This can work – but it is going to require action and funding – from the folks that it is important to.

Jim Carius”

After all that great info, here is ANOTHER video! It is a Class 11 promo parody video made by Fire Guys Racing with #1108.

Have you read enough yet? I’ll throw this in here too. We’ve been entertaining the idea of a segment on our website (and here, as we cross-post) of a sort of “Ask the Fabricator/Mechanic” for Class 11, Class 9, Class 5/5-1600, VW Class 10, etc. anything VW. Would this be something that our readers would be interested in? If so, what questions do you have that you would like to see answered? Feedback is very appreciated – you can post here with your feedback or email us at shop@twolarrysracing.com. We would like to help out racers/future racers if we can, and having a comprehensive researchable FAQ seems to be a helpful venue. This isn’t a for-sure thing, but if we end up with enough feedback from you, our viewers, we would like to go forth with something like this.

We are also nearly at our 300th “like” on Facebook! As many of you know, we send random pieces of the Booger itself to winners of our various contests, so if you would like a piece of the Booger and haven’t liked us on Facebook already, be sure to do so!

So let’s end this long post with something funny. Car memes!

2014 Racing Association Schedules

Here is a list of some of the association’s schedules for 2014.

As a sidenote, and not just because we are partial, the most affordable fees comparatively for a major association that offers both short and long course is VORRA.

VORRA – Valley Off Road Racing Association (CANCELLED)

Due to extenuating circumstances, VORRA has closed its doors. If you are interested in taking up the reins of VORRA, please contact the administrators at VORRA’s site. You can read read more about VORRA’s closure here. (edited 2/25/14)
