Smith Flat VW Show, Boys and Girls Club Fundraiser

May 4, 2014 saw TLR at the Smith Flat VW Hangout in Hangtown [Placerville], CA. The show was sponsored by Lance of TNT Powdercoating, Drew of German Auto Werks, and Tim of Sierra Landscape Material. The proceeds from the car show and raffle were to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of El Dorado County. A special thank you to Ray for organizing the show and making everything possible. The show attracted VW enthusiasts from all over Northern California, even notable business owners such as Tom Brown of ParaVi Vinyards (formerly Primus Winery, and if you have a chance check out his AMAZING show room [and bathrooms = WOW!!] and delicious high-quality wine) in Camino, CA and Charles Knight at Ruffhaus Hot Dog Co. in El Dorado Hills, CA. You might remember Charles from our March 1, 2014 posting of the Ruffhaus VW cruise.

For TLR, this show started much farther back, like over four years ago farther back. But I digress…the final details were finished up this week, first with the orange 1957 oval window ragtop with a 1914cc turbo engine Bug owned by Brad Martin. TLR put the final programming on the ignition system and this beautiful car headed to its first photo shoot, complete with a gorgeous model. Then Saturday was devoted (literally the whole day) entirely to putting the final touches on the impressive turbo 2165cc 1964 car Sleepy, owned by Frank Kopita. This car has been a LONG time in the making, but what an amazing car this has turned out to be. If you want an adrenaline rush, you don’t even have to be behind the wheel of this car – it will vibrate your ear drums even from a distance and bring chills to your soul. We are so pleased to finally see this beast owning the roads. When we have more substantial video and photos, Sleepy will also have its own page up there in our menu. Unfortunately we missed Frank by ten minutes at the show, but we will have other coverage later of Sleepy64.

In all, there was a great turnout for this show, which was the first of what will be many years to come. Over eighty cars turned up throughout the day. How could you pass it up, with bottom-less Mimosa’s, excellent local-draft IPA beer, awesome food, great live entertainment, and a raffle with plenty of generous prizes from local businesses? The overall result is spectacular – a benefit car show for kids with great VW people and an awesome turn-out. TLR is proud to do what we do, and support the causes we support.

This was an amazing surprise for us - she painted the Green Booger! Joyce Martin creates beautiful art of VW's and many subjects. Please contact her if interested in having her capture the essence of your VW.
We would like to specially congratulate Brad Martin on his People’s Choice Award (the only award given) with his 1957 Turbo Bug – this was the car’s first show. We are very proud to be involved with this car from the beginning, and aiding in Brad’s dream becoming a reality. You can view some of the build photos by clicking in the menu above. Additionally, his very talented wife Joyce Martin painted some very popular VW art, some of which sold very quickly. If you are interested in purchasing one of her works or commissioning her for a custom painting, please contact:

We were so awed, impressed, and grateful to be bestowed with her gift of a painting of the Green Booger, which is modeled from the 2012 VORRA Halloween BBQ races at Prairie City. Thank you so much Joyce, for your thoughtful gift!

Please click on each photo if you would like to see an enlarged version with more of the photo in it. We didn’t bring our 1964 Notchback this time – we simply didn’t have the time to prep that in addition to the other two excellent TLR representatives. I think they will certainly suffice. ๐Ÿ˜‰

RIP Jeff Johnson, Race Reviews, VORRA News, Videos, and more

Today we would like to point you to other team’s race reviews from recent races run. Hmm, that was quite the alliteration. This should keep you busy for at least a little while. ๐Ÿ˜€ We haven’t had a really big update post recently, so this hopefully makes up for it.

———————-

First, we would like to offer our condolences to those involved in the Battle at Primm accident. Passenger Jeff Johnson succumbed to his injuries and has tragically passed away. The driver of the Bajalite was cut badly but released from the hospital. We are very sorry to hear of his passing, and wish him Godspeed over a perfect course.
You may read about it at Race-Dezert here. Also, if you would like to donate to his family to help cover his medical bills, etc. please visit the donation fundraiser page. The racing community outpouring has really been staggering – racers have big hearts.

1121 Team H12:One Racing

You may recognize these guys from our coverage of the 2013 SCORE Baja 1000. Team H12:One Racing are back in the news, and just completed the 2014 SCORE San Felipe 250! If you have a chance, take a look at what their team supports too – they have a great big heart and race in the name of a very incredible cause. #1121 has been adopted as the mascot for the children at the La Casa de Esperanza, a refuge home for mothers and children in Mexico. Congratulations on your first finish AND second place, guys!
Read their race review at their website’s blog here.

Another fun review is from Emme Hall’s experience at the 2014 SNORE Battle at Primm. You may recognize Emme from the calendar fundraisers for their rally in Morocco, the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles. She also raced for a time with #1107 the Desert Dingos, or as an internet radio host, and car reviewer for the the YouTube show Roadfly TV and many more. Congratulations on completing Battle at Primm, Emme and Mega Monkey Motorosports!
Read Emme’s race review on her website blog here.

Also from Battle At Primm is Ed Mahoney’s in-car #1189 footage. Congratulations on your first place out of seven Class 11 cars, Ed!

Here is the official results from SNORE. Apparently someone stole the timer from the finish line (!?!) so they apologized for the delay. #1134 finished first both days and #1189 second both days.

If that’s not enough for you, here is a video of Sunday’s landrush start by Other Level Racing. You can view more of their videos from BAP at their YouTube Channel.

If you’re in the mood to troll photos on a website, here is a link to Jenn Hellstrom’s race recap on Race-Dezert, complete with a photo gallery.

Here is MORE video! Fair warning, this one is longer, about fifteen minutes. It shows class 11 action from 11BrosMotorsport’s Class 5/1600’s in-car cam.

Last in the news front, but certainly not least, there have been some developments on the VORRA front. You may have already read our previous post With a heavy heart we announce VORRA is no longerโ€ฆ. Jim Carius (remember him from VORRA’s Nine Town? I just had a laugh when I realized Larry G is on the preview picture for that video, too) and Sam Cothrun of Samco Fab have stepped forward and are trying to bring together investors and event organizers. You can read the thread here at Race-Dezert, with organizational info starting on page four.

Please note that the originally scheduled March 22-23 meet is STILL HAPPENING. However, this is NOT a VORRA event therefore I implore you to recognize this is a race-prep TEST RUN against other like-cars and BBQ MEET among friends with race cars at Prairie City. ๐Ÿ˜‰ NOT a race event. Additionally, we received word that the originally VORRA scheduled April Prairie City races may actually be happening, so keep prepping your car as we VORRA-ites MAY race after all. I also suggest keeping an eye on that thread as nothing is set in stone yet in regards to bringing VORRA back.

I will post the gist of what is being discussed, but to stay updated daily you’ll need to visit the forum. Also, if you are an interested investor, someone who knows they will be available to race, etc. PLEASE contact Jim and Sam. They are working REALLY hard to get VORRA going again and are already working on the 2015 permits but they need racers and volunteers to commit now to make this happen.

First post from Sam:
“I have a few ideas that I am working on to get it purchased and get it back running, but it will take a group effort, we could even call it Group V…..

I spoke with the unofficial VORRA lawyer Mike Lehner about how to keep a group of Vorra stockholders safe from litigation, and the other group of people that run it safe as well. He is on board with helping. I can help too, but not run it.

If anybody is interested in talking more about it, e mail me with contact info and we can directly discuss ideas on how we can get this together and how to share the workload. We all want to see it come back at at least some level.

samcofabrication@sbcglobal.net”

Follow-up post from Jim on February 28th:
“There are some of us working behind the scenes to try and make something happen here. Basically, it take 4 things:

– Organizers time and commitment
– Money
– Volunteers time
– Racer’s commitment

If you or someone you know can help fund VORRA through this crisis through sponsorship arrangements, short term loans, donations, or some other means, we need to hear from you.

If you are not currently a ‘VORRAteer’ and have time and energy to devote to off road racing in Northern Nevada/Northern CA, we need to hear from you.

If you are a racer who is willing to commit (which means writing a check for entry fees right now) to the short course races or the desert races that still have permits standing, we need to hear from you.

Prairie City round one is scheduled for 3 weeks away. My personal opinion is we cannot meet that deadline. PC 2 however is definitely in reach, there are some ways that Yerington might be salvaged, and if we keep on racing we can start working right now on the 2015 permits and issues.

Give me a call at 530-913-9172 or shoot an email to ncspeed@gmail.com – or contact Samco Fab above.

This can work – but it is going to require action and funding – from the folks that it is important to.

Jim Carius”

After all that great info, here is ANOTHER video! It is a Class 11 promo parody video made by Fire Guys Racing with #1108.

Have you read enough yet? I’ll throw this in here too. We’ve been entertaining the idea of a segment on our website (and here, as we cross-post) of a sort of “Ask the Fabricator/Mechanic” for Class 11, Class 9, Class 5/5-1600, VW Class 10, etc. anything VW. Would this be something that our readers would be interested in? If so, what questions do you have that you would like to see answered? Feedback is very appreciated – you can post here with your feedback or email us at shop@twolarrysracing.com. We would like to help out racers/future racers if we can, and having a comprehensive researchable FAQ seems to be a helpful venue. This isn’t a for-sure thing, but if we end up with enough feedback from you, our viewers, we would like to go forth with something like this.

We are also nearly at our 300th “like” on Facebook! As many of you know, we send random pieces of the Booger itself to winners of our various contests, so if you would like a piece of the Booger and haven’t liked us on Facebook already, be sure to do so!

So let’s end this long post with something funny. Car memes!

Booger in the Local Paper…and quaint starters

The Green Booger representing Class 11 at a fundraiser car show.

The Green Booger representing Class 11 at a fundraiser car show.

Would you look at that…we were in the local newspaper and didn’t even know. Thank you Mollie Herrod! This photo was taken at Automotive Excellence in Placerville, CA for the New Morning Youth & Family Services charity benefit. It was a car show and harvest festival fundraiser for families and youths in need. We are pleased to support a great cause. You wouldn’t know it, but this photo was taken only six days after the 2013 VORRA USA 500. The Booger cleans up nice, apparently. We are very honored that the Mountain Democrat chose our car to represent in their article! (which is even more special considering how many nice, shiny cars there were)
You can read about that day in our blog post HERE. They even had a trophy truck bouncy slide for the kids.

This has also been circulating around the internet, and we thought we should share. Hmm, maybe a TLR designed one for off-road racers should be in the works?!

VW Hand Starter...maybe TLR should start producing these for racers.

Babysitting with Boogers

What a way to have a Friday evening! You know it’s good when you choose a proper babysitter for your kids:

The young Larrys enjoyed talking with each other through the helmets/intercom and pretending they were being passed on the left by Trophy Trucks while driving the Booger. Which actually is pretty close to reality haha.

In other news, the VORRA short course races at Prairie City start THIS WEEKEND! Sunday will have more great short course action at Prairie City SVRA, and if you print this coupon below out then you will get $2 off of adult admission. The last two races of the season, the short course races, will determine who will be making the podium at the year-end awards. For the Class 11’s, Petfinder #1106 is currently at 238 points, and Meek Racing #1142 is at 172. It will be interesting to see how these last two races play out for these two competitive teams! Good luck to all entrants in the races. For more season point information, please visit VORRA’s 2013 Season Points page. The Halloween BBQ Races this year will be held for the first time at the Wild West Motorsport Park in Reno, NV, better known as the Lucas Oil racing track. More information on both short course races, the last two of the year for VORRA, can be found here.

We are pleased to present to you new photos of the Booger in the 2013 USA 500! A special thank you to Amy Fye Photography for taking such great photos of so many cars, and being so generous to the racers. Finally, if you are going to the MORE Powder Puff races this weekend, please be sure to check out Emme’s Hall’s team and her calendar, which will be available for sale in person at the races. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to place your order for the 2014 Women of Off-Road Racing calendar! Proceeds go towards Emme Hall’s USA team racing in the 2014 Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in Morocco, a nine day all female off road rally with no GPS. They will compete for the coveted 15000 Euros purse, which will go towards FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered. Any funds raised beyond what is necessary for the team will go directly to FORCE. This is a calendar that you would be proud to have on your wall and is family-friendly. Not to mention it makes a great Christmas gift! Two Larrys Racing and the Green Booger are honored to have been chosen for a feature in their calendar again, and are proud to support a great cause.

Check out this video from www.brandonarthurracing.com and www.hrtmotorsports.com. This was the 2013 MORE/SNORE Midnight Special just this last weekend, Brandon Arthur at the wheel. We may take longer than everyone else and get pretty beat up in the process, but we don’t go fast enough to do this! We are pleased to report that they are okay.

Second order of business are media coverage for the 2013 VORRA USA 500! You may read articles at the following links. More articles and media are trickling in slowly.

Boogers In The New Morning

Once again, we dusted the Booger off and put it’s big-boy wax on to go clandestine green in a sea of show cars. If the Booger, a race car with plenty of battle scars, can’t pull this off I don’t know what car could. Though the race numbers might have been a good indicator that it was a car that didn’t belong, but ended up belonging.

The Booger greeting people near the gate

The Booger greeting people near the gate. Who would have thought this car had competed in a 500 mile race just six days prior and took first in class? Luckily no one questioned our shock zip tied to the cage, still. Or the copious amounts of silt behind the firewall.

We were pleased to be given a space near the gate, where everyone driving by on the main road would be blinded by obnoxious green. It apparently worked, as we had family members and a couple of friends actually come to the show BECAUSE they had seen the Green Booger parked there when they drove by. And that feels nice.

This car show was a charity benefit organized by Automotive Excellence for the local New Morning Youth and Family Services counseling center. They have excellent staff members who truly care about children and families, as well as support an emergency youth shelter (the only one of its kind in El Dorado County) and other services. A giant thank you to Automotive Excellence for putting on such a successful fundraiser and supporting a great cause. It was nice to see so many people enjoy the show, and so many car owners bring their beautiful cars to donate funds for the benefit.

Any car could enter for a $15 fee, and the show was free to the public. Also included were a very entertaining DJ, a cake and pie contest, a subsequent cake walk, face painting and a giant off-road Trophy Truck slide for the kids, dancing in the cake walk circle, Dangerous Dan’s Hotdog Stand, a raffle with generous donations, and various local businesses and vendors. Our own children were so very excited to win at both the cake walk AND a raffle item! Our daughter also traded Dangerous Dan (a very nice man) one of the brownies she won at the cake walk for a hot dog. Which, by the way, if you ever have a chance to purchase one of his dogs, the Bacon-Wrapped Polish dog with all the fix’ns was most excellent.

Thank you Automotive Excellence and New Morning for a great day! Two Larrys Racing is proud to support a great cause. Even the grumpy green older brother with race numbers had a good time at the happy family day.

Random Weekend at The Larry’s…

And this post doesn’t even include our friend Ryan Crook’s new TLR car, Otto (’90 Jetta)!

If you were looking for a great Christmas present or 2014 calendar for yourself, look no further. Emme Hall, who you may remember from TLR’s 2013 Rallye Aicha des Gazelles coverage, is putting together a 2014 calendar like last year. It will feature off-road women from across the states, and proceeds from the sales will support FORCE, a breast cancer foundation, as well as Emme’s team slated to run in the 2014 Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in Moracco. Voting for who will be featured in the upcoming calendar is taking place NOW at this link: https://www.facebook.com/EmmeHall?sk=app_162850930432266&app_data, and if you have a Facebook account please cast your vote. You allowed one vote per day. If you would like to see the only Class 11 represented featured in 2014 again (the Green Booger!), please cast your vote for us! We will provide a new photo with the new and improved Booger when that is available. Remember – some of the ladies featured have defeated cancer itself, and that is more courageous than any race experience we have had. Congratulations to those certain ladies!

First on the list for the TLR household would be the VW Syncro Vanagon, AKA Vandamm. A beloved and essential part of our family, the Van is getting [slowly] closer to running again. We are currently adding a turbo VW Corrado engine, and with any custom project it has presented its own set of problems:

Now that the new brackets are made, the three manifolds we have don’t fit. So, back to the drawing board on that one. Also on the list this weekend was fitting the custom decklid to Sleepy ’64:

Another creation from Larry G, our fab guy, and our customer. This is actually two decklids put together, as the customer did not want the raised decklid look, and stock doesn't fit the turbo.

It turned out really nice! From a distance you can’t even tell that it’s not a stock decklid. You can certainly hear it’s not a stock engine, however. But wait, there’s more! Because photos make a blog:

We’re working double time to make it to the August 31-September 2, 2013 VORRA USA 500 in Yerington. And if that isn’t enough, check out Gary’s pride and joy, one of the three amigos. This will be his life’s masterpiece, and will eventually have its own page here. We needed room for metal work in the barn, so it was kicked out for the weekend. It deserved a bath too, so here it is! I don’t believe we’ve introduced it on TLR before. This is a 1969 Karmann Ghia that outperformed a Porsche in handling and power, thus securing its home with Larry G for good. He has been working on putting together a monster engine for it that will have a ridiculous amount of horsepower. Someday we’ll have better photos of it, too.

38th, 70, and Top Ten

Emme Hall has released her recap on her and Sabrina Howels’ experience in the desert rally in Morocco, 2013 Rallye Aicha des Gazelles. Emme stated:

“I feel pretty proud of where we ended up, slightly better than average at 38th out of 84 in first participants, and 70th out of 150 overall. In the Isuzu Media Challenge we earned a top ten finish…” You can read more about their experiences at her blog and the particular blog entry for the recap HERE.

You may recognize these ladies in their awesome calendar they produced late last year, in which the Green Booger was featured for the month of March. They raised funds for their rally entrance and for the Breast Cancer Foundation with their calendar sales. Congratulations on your finish ladies!
